Forces of Darkness

The Forces of Darkness refers to a gathering of evil (and sometimes neutral) aligned warriors in the game Mortal Kombat: Armageddon. They are the opposing army that clashes with the Forces of Light in the Battle of Armageddon. In the intro sequence of the game, and in the final moments of its Konquest mode, two armies, the Forces of Light and the Forces of Darkness, do battle in the southlands of Edenia. They are interrupted by the rising of the pyramid of Argus, and atop it is Blaze. The two armies now race to the top, each individual hoping to defeat the fire-elemental and absorb his power. Each character's ending in the game is what happens if they were the one to defeat Blaze and take the prize for themself. In the game, it is shown that Shinnok is partially responsible for the large amount of warriors, as he spreads the word of Blaze and the prize to other kombatants. In Outworld, Taven, searching for Quan Chi, listens in on a conversation between the Netherrealm sorcerer, Shang Tsung, Onaga and Shao Kahn. They are discussing an alliance, though it is a shakey one, as they are all evil and betrayal is to be expected. Quan Chi convinces his bitter enemies to stand together, at least initially, and when the Forces of Light are destroyed, they'll see which evil triumphs over all of the others.
It is interesting to note that there are more warriors in the Forces of Darkness than on the side of Light. However, there is a notable amount of them who simply joined to get closer to their true enemies. A good example of this isNitara. Whilst she herself is morally neutral, she joined the Forces of Darkness in order to defeat Ashrah, who had been slaying many of her people, the Vampires.
But the best example is Scorpion, who joined the Forces of Darkness only to slay his archnemesis Quan Chi.

Forces of Light

The Forces of Light refers to a gathering of good-alligned warriors in the gameMortal Kombat: Armageddon. They are the opposing army that clashes with the Forces of Darkness in the Battle of Armageddon.

As revealed in the biography for Johnny Cage, he is the one who started gathering the Forces of Light, due to Liu Kang's death and Raiden's corruption (although the latter does still join the gathering). In the biography of Kenshi, it states that he desired to lead them, but it is not known if he actually did so and in the Unchained ending of Kitana, she was originally told by Blaze that she must unite the forces of good but apparently, she was helping Liu Kang's spirit after this.

Wu Shi Academy

Wu Shi Academy is a location in Earthrealm within the Mortal Kombat video games. The lei tai center platform is suspended by five massive statues of great masters that founded the academy. The center practice area is used to evaluate test as the teachers watch from the tower.
It first appeared by that name in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, as the place where Liu Kang and the Shaolin monks were training when Kang was killed byShang Tsung, disguised as Kung Lao and assisted by Quan Chi. It is also the place where Bo' Rai Cho trains Earth's warriors like Liu Kang and Kung Lao.
In Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks, Liu Kang, Kung Lao, Johnny Cage, and Sonya Blade escape to the Wu Shi Academy through a portal on Shang Tsung's island. This is also where the heroes of come to as a haven. There they were honored by Raiden and the Shaolin monks before the academy is attacked by Tarkatan warriors. TheWarrior Shrine from the first Mortal Kombat game is on the grounds of the Wu Shi Academy, and the mysterious warrior Ermac lurks there waiting for a challenger. The Wu Shi Academy also made it's appearance on Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe.

Noob-Smoke

Noob-Smoke Bio Model Deception.PNG
Noob-Smoke
Noob Saibot and Smoke debuted as a tag-team in Mortal Kombat: Deception. Their goal as a partnership (though Noob Saibot's personal storyline depicts Smoke as having no real opinion in their decisions together, due to his reprogramming) is to harvest Smoke's nanotechnology which he inherited through automation, manifest inhabitants of the Netherrealm with it and subsequently form an army of cyborg-demons, which their motives to ruling such a force is so far unknown.
The tag-team of Noob-Smoke appears as the sub-boss ofDeception.
Every other playable character in Deception has two fighting styles and one weapon. However, instead of switching fighting styles, Noob-Smoke switches characters, and doesn't have a weapon-fighting style.

History

Prior to their union, Noob Saibot and Smoke had no known previous affiliations with each other, except for the fact that they were both Lin Kuei warriors in their lifetimes. Noob Saibot was the original Sub-Zero (and the older brother of Sub-Zero), whereas Smoke was the close friend of Sub-Zero. Following his death, the original Sub-Zero would eventually become the demonic wraith known as Noob Saibot, while Smoke would be captured by his own ninja clan and was automated into a cyborg, programmed to seek and terminate his close friend (who had fled the Lin Kuei).
Both warriors were present during the events of Mortal Kombat 3(and its variations), in which Noob Saibot (under the orders of his new master, Shinnok) was to spy on the events of Mortal Kombat, and feign an allegiance to Shao Kahn - for the time being. It is not certain if this is canon, but it is believed that Smoke had gained Sub-Zero's assistance in regaining his memories and learned that he still had a soul. His soul was able to override his programming and thus became an ally of Sub-Zero's once more. Whether Smoke was able to fight alongside Raiden's forces or not is unclear; what is known is that Smoke was eventually captured by Kahn's minions and locked away in the prisons of Kahn's fortress, apparently a war trophy for the emperor. Smoke was shut down, and remained inactive for many years.
During the aftermath of Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance and the beginnings of Mortal Kombat: Deception, the leaderless Noob Saibot found Smoke's inactive body in a prison cell. Realizing that Smoke would be the perfect template for Noob's ambition to create an army of cyber demons and to rule the Netherrealm, Noob Saibot reprogrammed Smoke and reactivated him, thus allowing his body to reshape (due to his nanotechnological upgrades). He programmed Smoke to obey him and only him without question. The two then headed for Outworld, where Noob Saibot began his journey to ultimate power.
Noob and Smoke were then split off into separate individual fighters for Mortal Kombat: Armageddon. In the game's Konquest mode, however, they are seen working together to infiltrate the Lin Kuei temple, which involved a fight with the Tengu that is only alluded to in the actual gameplay. As Sub-Zero and Taven come to an understanding, Smoke invades and converts Lin Kuei warriors into Shadow Assassins, prompting Sub-Zero and Taven to fight them off. Taven defeats Smoke, who departs to inform Noob Saibot of his failure. Taven then encounters and defeats Noob Saibot (who has apparently defeated Sub-Zero during the absence). Taven leaves the unconscious Noob with Sub-Zero as he continues on his quest.

Possible future

It is as of yet unknown as to whether Sub-Zero was successful in cleansing his brother's soul or not. However, in the introduction to Armageddon, Smoke is seen fighting alongside the Forces of Light, whilst Noob is shown within the Forces of Darkness. This suggests that whilst Sub-Zero may have successfully restored Smoke, Noob managed to escape the cleansing process. It is also unknown if Noob Saibot has given up his plans for world domination or if they have been merely postponed.
As the characters are separated in Armageddon, they each have a separate ending. In Smoke's ending, he transforms into a living cloud-like being that calls itself "Smoke". In Noob Saibot's, Noob is transported to an arena where his entity does battle with the Sub-Zero he was before he was killed by Scorpion over control of Noob's soul. What emerges from the confrontation is only known to be something new.

White Lotus Society

The White Lotus Society was jointly founded by Raiden, the immortal protector ofEarthrealm, and the Shaolin Order of Light sect, following the death of the Great Kung Laoat the hands of Goro in Mortal Kombat. Since the sorcerer Shang Tsung had finally defeated the longtime champion with a recruit from Outworld, it became apparent that Earthrealm was vulnerable to attack not just by native enemies, but those from foreign worlds as well. To that end, the Thunder God and the monks agreed to hand select a group of champions from among the best fighters in Earthrealm. This group would dedicate their lives to learning and understanding how to defend the independence of Earthrealm from the threats of other worlds.
The Society's existence is kept secret from the uninitiated, leading to rumours spread by the population. Many people therefore are unaware even of the existence of other realms, knowing only the Order of Light and its involvement with Earthrealm.
Recruits into the White Lotus need not be monks of the Order of Light, and commitment to the Society is not for life. Members may leave of their own will at any time, and thus the Society's numbers have never been known, but are presumed small. Members of the Society identify each other by a white headband bearing the Buddhist symbol of an eight-petaled lotus. Their martial arts skills may be acquired from native or foreign sources, but the fighters themselves must be from Earthrealm.

Mortal Kombat: Deception's Konquest mode reveals that Shujinko was an early recruit into the White Lotus Society. Eager to prove himself a worthy defender of his home, Shujinko is ordered by the recruiting Master Shen to rid the surrounding area of a band of mysterious warriors who have invaded Earthrealm from another world. His success would increase his likeliness of being nominated to represent the White Lotus in the Mortal Kombat tournament, fulfilling his childhood desire. Although Shujinko succeeds in driving off the foreign invaders, Master Shen realizes that his soul is tainted by an unexplainable evil which prevents him from representing the goodness and purity of the White Lotus in the tournament. Shujinko is nonetheless made a member of the Society for his efforts. He attempts to rid his soul of the evil taint, but the process takes many years, by which time the tournament has concluded without his involvement. In his senior years, Shujinko is at last able to access the White Lotus Society's stronghold in the eastern mountains, where the spirit of Mortal Kombat champion Liu Kangwaits to pass on his skills.
It is unknown whether Shujinko's story is considered canon, but the White Lotus Society nonetheless is involved with the history of the Mortal Kombat series. Liu Kang, Kung Lao, and Kai were all members of the Society at one time, but left for unknown reasons. All three as well as Shujinko have continued the tradition of defending Earthrealm from foreign attackers. Liu Kang represented the White Lotus Society in Kung Lao and Shujinko's place in Mortal Kombat, and was the first and only Society member to successfully fend off Outworld in the tournament by defeating the reigning champion Goro at last.
However, the victory would prompt Outworld emperor Shao Kahn to order Tarkatan hordes to raid the Shaolin Temple in Liu Kang's absence. Many monks of the Order of Light were slaughtered in the massacre, and all of the White Lotus Society's members save for Kai were eliminated. It is not known whether Kai had already left the Society at this time, but he took to wandering the world in the aftermath.
Liu Kang and Kung Lao have attempted to rebuild the ranks of the White Lotus several times over the years while expanding the Order of Light since the massacre. But their plans have been interrupted by threats from Shao Kahn, Shinnok, and others. While the Order of Light regained its numbers, the White Lotus Society has not featured an active member for many years, save Shujinko. The resurrection of Raiden with a much stronger intolerance of threats to Earthrealm, and his ambitions to take matters into his own hands, makes the current need for the Society ambiguous.

Tekunin

The Tekunin were a group of cybernetic ninjas formed by Sektorhimself.
After Sektor's failure in wresting theLin Kuei clan from Sub Zero, he fled to Japan in order to establish his own ninja clan that were formed in his own image. His followers became cybernetic ninja warriors, though not on a technological level as high as his own.
Sektor, for whatever reason, was in the Temple of Argus in the Botan Jungle. He witnessed the Edenian demigod Taven activate the alter and speak to it, presumably not hearing Argus himself. He captured Taven, brought him to his clan's warship and tortured him for info on what he learned from the alter, but Taven refused to answer. Then, Special Forces fighters, led by Sonya Blade, showed up and attacked the Tekunin warship, allowing Taven a chance to make a hasty escape.

Special Forces

The Special Forces was initially formed in the United States of America as the United States Special Forceswith the goal of stopping international crime gangs, in particular the Red Dragon and Black Dragon clans. By the time of Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, the organization has become the Earthrealm Special Forces; while it was still an anti-crime organization, its mandate had expanded to defending all of Earthrealm against outerdimensional invasions, such as by the Tekunin.
The game that includes the Special Forces as the main protagonists is Mortal Kombat: Special Forces for the Playstation. Kano and Jarek of the Black Dragon are the organization's main enemies. Jackson "Jax" Briggs,Sonya Blade, Cyrax, and Kenshi are the only playable character members in the series. Non-playable characters include Mikka Stone, Sylence, Torque, and Vapor.
The Outer World Investigation Agency (OIA) was something of a successor to the original U.S. Special Forces, as many members of the U.S. Special Forces later join the OIA. The OIA later became the Earthrealm Special Forces.

History

For years, they were bitter rivals with the Lin Kuei, from which they had originally sprung. They were eventually wiped out by the necromancer Quan Chi, who destroyed all of the members of the clan (Hanzo Hasashi, a.k.a. Scorpion, who was murdered by the elder Sub-Zero before this happened).
The Shirai Ryu was formed many years ago by a Lin Kuei warrior namedTakeda. He eventually grew tired of the Lin Kuei and left the clan. However, leaving the clan is punishable by death, and Takeda was sought after by Lin Kuei assassins. He left China and returned to his homeland in Japan, where he offered his services to the lords and generals. His art gradually spread throughout Japan and developed into the art of ninjutsu. In addition to teaching his new art form, he also taught modified versions of Lin Kuei tactics, as well as revealing many of their secrets. This only further infuriated the Lin Kuei when Takeda's teachings became well-known with many followers throughout Japan. His followers became known as the Shirai Ryu.
Shirai Ryu and Lin Kuei became tremendous rivals. Takeda's clan mocked the Lin Kuei by dressing in similar outfits of yellow color and teaching modified versions of their own secrets. He managed to avoid many assassination attempts well into his later years. He was eventually killed by poison in his tea. It was never known if Lin Kuei was responsible for his death. The animosity between Lin Kuei and Shirai Ryu continued after his death, as the Shirai Ryu became more prominent.
During the events of Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero, the sorcerer Quan Chi hired members from both rival clans to find the Map of Elements giving directions to Amulet of Shinnok: Lin Kuei warrior Sub-Zero and Shirai Ryu member Hanzo Hasashi were the members of the clans respectively chosen for the task. Quan Chi had originally sent Sub-Zero to find the map, but he had also sent Hasashi in the event that Sub-Zero failed in his arduous quest. Neither warrior knew of the other's involvement until they discovered each other in the room of the Shaolin Temple containing the map and immediately engaged each other in battle. Sub-Zero won the battle with his ice-powers, killing Hanzo in the process, and retrieved the map. He gave the map to Quan Chi, and as payment to the Lin Kuei, he wiped out the rival Shirai Ryu clan.
Hanzo returned from death as Scorpion, and met his murderer in the Netherealm, where Sub-Zero had gone to stop Quan Chi from releasing the fallen Elder God Shinnok. The two engaged in a rematch of their earlier battle with Sub-Zero once again emerging as the victor. Unable to exact his revenge, Scorpion waited until Mortal Kombat, where he battled Sub-Zero for a third time. This time, Scorpion would be victorious and finally avenged his own death by killing Sub-Zero. Sub-Zero was reborn in the Netherealm as the demon Noob Saibot, only to have his younger brother take his place in future tournaments using the Sub-Zero name.
As part of a deal with the Elder Gods in order to combat the threat from Onaga, the Shirai Ryu were resurrected in exchange for Scorpion serving as the Champion against this evil. However, their deal was only partly followed as after Onaga's defeat, the Shirai Ryu were resurrected but not as flesh and blood Humans but rather as undead hellspawn like Scorpion himself. Scorpion would take his undead clan and wage eternal enimity against the Elder Gods for the crimes they had committed. At this point, the Shirai Ryu were also called Hellspawn.
In Scorpion's Armageddon ending, As the fire of Blaze was extinguished and divine powers was given to him, what appeared in its place brought elation to Scorpion's tormented soul: His ninja clan, the Shirai Ryu, had been fully resurrected and as complete flesh and blood human beings. Numbering in the thousands, they covered the surface of the Pyramid of Argus awaiting Scorpion's command. It seems that Hanzo Hasashi (Scorpion) was now the absolute leader of his people. Among them was Scorpion's wife and son. He was finally able to see and hold his family in his arms, yet however their reunion was to be short-lived. The wicked sorcerer Quan Chi suddenly appeared among them. He grabbed Scorpion's young son and disappeared through a portal to the Netherrealm. Enraged, Scorpion ordered his clan to hunt down the sorcerer. He will not rest until his son has been rescued and recovered, and Quan Chi is dead.
